My List

This is the most current list of my tasks and goals. It will be updated periodically as I think of more or learn enough to refine them further.

Assist in running a project for a non-profit
I had to cut this back from the original 20 hours due to my current position. I still think there is a lot to be gained by volunteering my time for a non-profit, so its staying in.

Be more proactive at becoming a better web programmer
My last year wasn’t a complete waste because I actually did teach myself web technologies. There is always more to learn, so this is a lot more abstract than the rest of the goals. One example of something I have planned is attending the Pittsburgh PHP Developers Meetup on July 1st.

Volunteer to coach or assistant coach a kids sports team
The Brentwood Area Soccer Association in house league should be starting soon, I’m going to be contacting some people to volunteer for the upcoming season.

Start, run and grow an online community
There is this, but I also have a project I’m working on: LightbulbFORGE that I’ll be using and posting about for this one.

Give a speech a week to local organizations
There are a lot of public libraries around that give free classes on blogging and other computer and internet related topics that I’m going to use to get started with this task.

Write a regular newsletter or blog
You’re looking at it. I’m going to try to push myself to update as often as possible and hoping for five times a week.

Learn a foreign language fluently
Luckily, my girlfriend is already fluent in French, so I’m going to go with that.

Write three detailed business plans
I have a few ideas floating around right now. This is one business plan every 4 months which seems pretty doable.

Self-publish a book
No ideas for this at the moment, but it should be pretty fun.

Run a marathon
I’ve been toying around with this for a while, and its time to stop being so lazy and actually get in shape. Completing a marathon is one of those good far away but still within reach goals that should be an interesting journey in itself.

Read two books a month and review them
I need to get back into reading more, and what better way than to make that happen then to commit to blogging about them.

Post 10 blog comments a week on other people’s blogs
I saw this when I was browsing around and thought it was an interesting experiment. We’ll see how it goes.

Attend one cultural event per month
Whether its a concert, art show, going to a museum, the zoo, anything like that.
